Hi, my name is Richard Zijdeman and I work at the Dept. of Sociology at Utrecht University and am also appointed as an honorary research fellow at the department of Applied Social Science at the University of Stirling.
I study social stratification structures and how and why people are moving across these structures (mobility / status attainment). I am especially interested in how technological changes (e.g. industrialization, internet, means of transportation) facilitate opportunities or raise barriers for such movement. Currently my focus is on female labour force participation in the 19th and 20th centuries.
For my research I use quantitative sources with occupational data, mainly digitalized personal records such as marriage records, as well digitalized register data, such as censuses. In order to understand the influence of technological change I am also interested in detailed regional data on technological innovations.
