I was born, March 13, 1950, in Amsterdam, as the son of Elisabeth Speelman and Benoit van Waarden. Successively, I was educated in Groningen, Paramaribo (Surinam), Haarlem, Toronto (Canada), and Leyden. In the last two cities I studied sociology, history and political science at the universities bearing their names. Thereafter I taught at the Universities of Leyden, Konstanz (Germany), and now Utrecht. In between I have taught or was visiting fellow at the Center for European Studies of Stanford University, the Universities of Leipzig and of Vienna, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies NIAS (1998-99), and the European University Institute in Florence (2001, 2003), where I held a Jean Monnet Fellowship at the Robert Schumann Center for Advanced Studies.
My interests are in phenomena at the boundaries of politics, economics, law and history, seen through the eyes of a sociologist, i.e. political sociology, economic sociology, and sociology of law. Currently the main focus is on the governance of markets, regulation and political institutions. Among others I am interested in the intended and unintended effects of market liberalization on market governance institutions, in particular more indirect consequences, such as increases in the importance of other governance mechanisms as litigation and case law, private certification and associational self-regulation, rigid rule enforcement by new regulatory agencies, and internal bureaucracy in both public and private organizations. Earlier on I have published on labor relations, co-determination, history of technology, textile industry, industrial policy, collective action, business' associations, corporatism, state-industry relations, innovation, comparison of legal systems, epistemic communities, European integration, notably transposition of European directives in national law.
